Lately there is this sudden big hoo-ha about racism among Singaporeans. Seriously, I don't quite this whole thing.
I would like to put across the difference between "description" and "discrimination" in my very own perspective. Those who agree with me, great. Those who don't, just treat it as some nonsense you read on www.tribalfootball.com.
Okay I believe that among every race from every corner of the world, each and every one of them have this distinct trait, attribute which distinguish themselves from the rest. Maybe the accent, features, build, smell. But then, people don't see these differences as something special. And the "people" I'm talking about here are those who felt that they are the victim to these discriminations.
I think cartoons illustrate a very clear picture that differences among people of different races isn't something discriminating when mentioned. You see Asians are drawn with smaller eyes. The Caucasians have larger eyes and longer nose. Indians have their dark skin. Anybody sue cartoons for illustrating their characters this way? None I've heard of. I still watch cartoons and the characters still hold their distinct features.
Okay back to the point. Sometimes people just can't avoid using various words to highlight a certain race. Deep down inside, we know what they say is true. But then, being in a conservative society, it becomes a forbidden. People get sued and jailed for being honest. And mind you, some were said/typed in a very neutral tone. If you insist, an "encyclopedic" tone.
Racism is a thought, not a spoken. Doesn't mean nobody talks about it means racism doesn't exist but its when everybody talks about each other's smell, feature, color, accent and we all can agree and smile about it, then racism is no longer an issue.
But with the topic being a taboo, how can that be achieved? Because of certain races being labeled " minorities" , they have some sort of "special rights" . And these special rights are now seen as social norms. Something we give by default, they take for granted.
So can we call this "reverse discrimination" then?
If this is regarded as "protecting their feelings" and in addition to it , give them incentives and privileges to certain things, then I think it totally contradicts the whole reality feedback of "the survival of the fittest"
Come on, give freedom of speech a break. And I hope that after I share a dumb blonde joke, I don't see police by my doorsteps.
